Who we are

Who created TTLS?

Meet Lucía

I’m a 26-year-old who accidentally fell in love with teaching Spanish in 2021. I’ve always been passionate about learning languages, trying different methods to see what works. Growing up, I learned English in school, but what really helped me improve? Watching movies, listening to the classics, and even catching myself thinking in English (kinda weird, right?).

My love for languages didn’t stop there. In middle school, I gave Italian a shot, and my biggest flex at the time? Asking for directions in Venice with nothing but my Duolingo Italian. Years later, I tried to learn German on my own for two years—let’s just say it didn’t go as planned. I traveled to Idstein in 2024 and attempted my very bad German. I managed to get around, but holding a conversation? Not so much.

My Love for Travel

When I was 15, I crossed the pond for the first time and fell in love with Spain and Italy—the culture, the food, the people! Two years later, I got a scholarship to live in San Sebastián, Spain, for my senior year of high school. Even though I spoke Spanish, I still had culture shocks and had to adjust my words more than once.

Since then, I’ve traveled to 12 different countries, and the more I explored, the more I realized something: understanding the language makes the experience so much better. But back then, I didn’t think much of it.

The Accidental Teacher

My Happiest Mistake

Fast forward to 2021. Fresh out of university and planning to move to Valencia, Spain, I needed a job to save money but didn’t want to be tied to one place. That’s when I stumbled into tutoring—actually, I meant to teach English, but somehow ended up teaching Spanish. And it turned out to be the best mistake I ever made.

Teaching Spanish wasn’t just about grammar and vocabulary for me. I got to dive into the nuances of different accents, traditions, and cultural quirks. I loved every second of it. Soon, my students became friends, and what started as a side job no longer felt like work.

As I traveled through Spain that first year, I shared what I learned with them—and they loved it.

The Problem I Couldn’t Ignore

Eventually, I had to return to Mexico, but my passion for teaching only grew. I started sharing my own traditions and culture, and that’s when I noticed a big problem:

Most of my students could only practice Spanish during our lessons—1-2 hours per week. The rest of the time? No opportunities to practice. Some didn’t know any Spanish speakers where they lived, while others felt too nervous to speak, afraid of making mistakes.

And that hit home. Because I had been there too—struggling with Italian and German, feeling like I was learning but never actually speaking.

How The Traveling Learners Society Is Born

That Light Bulb Moment

So, I had an idea: What if I brought all my students together so they could practice with each other? And what if it wasn’t just my students, but Spanish learners from all over the world?

That’s how The Traveling Learners Society came to life.

The name? Inspired by one of my all-time favorite movies, The Dead Poets Society. I was listening to Taylor Swift’s Tortured Poets Department when it hit me—I wanted to create a society too. A space where Spanish learners could connect, practice, and learn together.

Why TTLS Matters

If you love traveling and learning languages, you probably agree—learning a language isn’t just about memorizing words. It’s about stepping into a different worldview. It’s about connecting with locals on your travels, having real conversations with Spanish-speaking friends, neighbors, partners (or their families!).

And that’s my goal with TTLS: to help you connect with the Spanish language and culture no matter where you are. So that when you do travel, you won’t feel like a tourist—you’ll feel like you belong.

Ready to Join the Journey?

Whether you're learning Spanish for travel, connection, or just the love of languages, The Traveling Learners Society is here to help you practice, grow, and immerse yourself in the culture—without waiting for the "perfect moment" to start speaking.
